CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

JAMES Linking Industry and Education

JAMES is creating a comprehensive scheme of CPD that will not only be highly relevant to teachers working in our industry area, but will also be delivered by industry professionals carried out in professional environments. The courses will often be arranged through our regional centres.
CPD activities are undertaken by teachers to update knowledge of their specialist subject and industry developments.

They are also to develop their teaching skills, including the effective application of e-learning techniques, application of diversity and equal opportunity principles in teaching, and use of learner feedback to improve performance.

JAMES has become aware of the lack of structured CPD that is relevant to the Music Production, Sound Engineering, Recording Industry, Audio Post Production, Music Industry, and Music Technology lecturers.

We are also aware that with the proliferation of courses in the Media and Music Technology areas, many people teaching have no experience of working in the industry.

From Sept 2007 full-time FE teachers have to undertake at least 30 hours of CPD per year, for the purposes of updating their knowledge of the subjects they teach and further developing their teaching skills. Part-time teachers must undertake pro-rata amounts of CPD.

JAMES is working to fill this gap and many lecturers have asked that our Master-class series be made available to them as CPD as well as to students.

LSC funding includes an element that is expected to be used for the training and development of staff.

The Survey

JAMES have constructed a national and international survey to ascertain just what the CPD needs are so that we can structure courses to meet them.

This questionnaire is structured so that we can find out what teachers need and what they want. We have tried to keep it as simple as possible, whilst respecting that there will be a huge range of needs and levels of knowledge between teachers.

Please take part in the survey and pass on details to as many people as possible.
