John Coates
John has been involved in the Music and Recording industry for some 44 years, but has spent the last 14 years involved in education. Starting off at Newham, but also involved in community drug rehabilitation and youth offending team projects, he was very soon invited to teach at Hackney and then South Thames.
Eventually accepting a full time role at South Thames, he was instrumental in raising the standards of the Music Technology Dept. to ultimately achieve CoVE, (Centre of Vocational Excellence), for Music, status. The only music CoVE in the UK.
In early 2007, although still teaching on a part-time basis, he was concerned about the plight of the music industry and became co-director of a new and innovative company, Was Not Media Ltd, with a mission statement to find new ways to remonetarise the industry. He also became a sponsor of the new open air festival in Kent, The Wye Fayre.
Apart from recently becoming a Learning Advisor for the Musicians Union, he has also found a new educational challenge at the Reigate School of Art, Design and Media, where, working with the team of industry professionals, he intends to deliver the highest quality music technology education.
