PROFILES

Jim Barrett

Apart from playing totally impractical (usually large) instruments, Jim is Head of the Division of Music and Sound in the Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries, which is part of the University of Glamorgan, Wales. He came to Glamorgan from South Thames College in Wandsworth and has extensive experience of writing courses not only for these institutions but also for Edexcel.

Jim does some of the things that academics usually do, like externally examining other people’s courses, writing papers and book chapters and some things that most academics do not do, like building string instruments and playing string and reed instruments.  His area of knowledge is really around musical instruments and applied musical acoustics, recording, and music across cultures and traditions.  He is a Director of the Music Producers Guild.  He had a previous existence as a NHS Histologist.
