Acknowledged to be the first residential studio in the world, Rockfield Studios has played host to many global artists - Oasis, Rush, Iggy Pop, Coldplay, Black Sabbath, Robert Plant, Manic Street Preachers to name but a few… and in 1975 was the primary studios used by Queen for the recording of the greatest pop record of all time Bohemian Rhapsody.

This is an amazing opportunity for the star JAMES students to soak up the vibes and learn from the engineers/producers who have worked with the best!

Summer School Day 1
Day 1 of recording on this year's GDF/JAMES Summer Session week at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales.

JAMES Co-Chair, Rita Campbell spent the afternoon there to meet everyone and spend some time in the studio with them all (and what a lovely lot they all are!). The 10 star students from various JAMES accredited courses all arrived at Rockfield yesterday evening (Monday 1st July) and after meeting for dinner and settling into their new home for the week it was time to get to work in the studio with the first band off the week 'American Space' - an up and coming 3 piece Bristol based Indie Rock band. Guided by Rockfield's superb engineers and production team it was everyone's job to get the band set up, mic up, line check and start recording - taking the time to try out different recording techniques, sounds and effects. Good luck everyone for the rest of this amazing week!

Summer School Day 2
JAMES Director Phil Harding visited the 10 students from JAMES Accredited courses on day 2 of the Summer School at Rockfield Studios 3 July 2024. Based in the Neve room the students were preparing today to record Bristol based band 'Little Thief' with in-house engineers Joe and Jack guiding the students through mic set up and choices for the drums initially. The students were pro-active with mic choices, positioning and channel choices. A very exciting day for all involved and the band also appreciated the opportunity to record at the legendary Rockfield Studios.

Summer School Day 3
Day 3 of GDF/JAMES Summer School at the legendary Rockfield Studio. Students have spent the day mixing the two tracks recorded on Day 1 and Day 2. Hands-on the Neve 2182 desk using the top down mixing technique starting with the vocal track. The students each contributed a mixing idea to the tracks and then set up the outboard and routing to achieve the desired result. Later the students experimented with old reel to reel tape recorders and splicing tapes to create loop effects. Thanks to the Rockfield team for a productive and informative week.

The students will be recording and working with world class vintage microphones and audio equipment in the most incredible studio and the most beautiful setting that is Rockfield Studios - www.rockfieldmusicgroup.com - Oasis, Queen (Bohemian Rhapsody), Rush, Iggy Pop, Coldplay, Black Sabbath, Robert Plant, Manic Street Preachers…

And, the students are being especially spoilt this year as they’ll be working with two very different bands in the studio - Little Thief and American Space - both very cool Bristol-based bands who are very highly rated amongst the Bristol posse of producers and artists.
LITTLE THIEF
AMERICAN SPACE
An indie rock band, also from Bristol (there's a fantastic music scene in Bristol!!). A new project headed by Jack Ogborne (Bingo Fury). So new that they don't yet have any social media presence or footage however we have every faith that they will be great for the participants to record and work with. Everything that Jack Ogborne is a part of is always interesting and highly creative.

The band are influenced by 80s independent music, bands such as Galaxy 500, The Feelies, The Clean and Pavement.
